Grants will be provided to independently owned and operated restaurants and bars that have had to temporarily cease operations, lay off employees, or whose businesses have been severely diminished due to locally mandated closure orders. Financial support will enable those owners to provide continuity of compensation and other benefits to employees who have been furloughed, laid off or whose incomes have been significantly reduced due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Fund will initially support the hundreds of restaurants and bars that have participated at SOBEWFF® within the past five years. After that community has been served and as the Fund continues to collect donations to finance local relief efforts, it will open up support to any independently owned and operated restaurant or bar in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach county that has been negatively impacted by COVID-19-related shutdowns. SOBEWFF® & FIU Chaplin School Hospitality Industry Relief Fund Application The recipient of funds hereby certifies that any and all funds received from the FIU Foundation shall be used in all respects for the specific purposes set forth herein, and that no such funds shall be used by the recipient for any other purpose whatsoever. Recipient must maintain complete and accurate accounts and records in accordance with nationally accepted industry standards, and must promptly deliver any such accounts and records, or allow access to such, to the Foundation and/or the University immediately upon request. Donate Now FAQ Who is eligible to receive financial support from this Fund? The Fund will provide immediate financial support to independently owned and operated restaurants and bars impacted by COVID-19 in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. The Fund will initially support the hundreds of restaurants and bars that have participated in the Food Network & Cooking Channel South Beach Wine & Food Festival presented by Capital One (SOBEWFF®) anytime during the past five years. After that community has been served and as the Fund continues to collect donations to finance local relief efforts, it will open up support to any independently owned and operated restaurant or bar in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach county that has been negatively impacted by COVID-19-related shutdowns. Is the Fund only designated for restaurants/bars in certain areas? At present, we are limiting our funding to Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. I am a restaurant/bar owner of several local establishments. Can I apply on behalf of each of them? Yes. Each eligible restaurant or bar will be considered. Restaurant/bar owners are required to submit one (1) application per establishment. I am an employee of a restaurant/bar that meets the requirements outlined above. Can I still apply to receive financial support? Only restaurant and bar owners applying on behalf of their establishments, which meet the requirements outlined above, will be considered. We encourage employees to contact the owner/operator of their establishment to apply for financial support on behalf of their team. How much funding are you able to provide? Each approved restaurant or bar will receive up to $500 per employee, with a maximum grant of $15,000 in total (up to 30 employees). If your restaurant or bar employs more than 30 individuals, you may choose to disperse that money to employees based on overall need. As a restaurant/bar owner, am I able to use this money to pay my establishment’s rent and/or insurance? No. Financial support from this Fund should be distributed directly to employees who have been furloughed, laid off, or whose incomes have been significantly reduced due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Each business owner (applicant) must provide the appropriate documentation of payout to employees (i.e. copies of pay stubs, bank account information, or any other documentation acceptable to FIU at its discretion). How will the funds be distributed to individual employees? Once an approved restaurant or bar receives the requisite funding, it is the restaurant or bar owner’s responsibility to ensure that the money gets distributed amongst his/her employees who have been furloughed, laid off, or whose incomes have been significantly reduced due to the COVID-19 pandemic. My restaurant/bar owner has distributed money to me from this Fund. Is the money taxable? Generally, no. IRS section 139 provides that qualified disaster relief payments from any sources in connection with qualified disasters are not taxable as income and are not subject to employment taxes or withholding (The COVID-19 pandemic is a qualified disaster). Please consult with your tax advisor for a final determination, as your individual situation may be different. Am I able to make a donation via check? If so, how? Yes.
